Why I Always Come Back to the Foundations
The Foundations of Health are at the heart of my practice because they are exactly that—the foundation upon which everything else is built. Before we reach for complicated protocols, supplements, or the latest wellness trend, I believe we need to look at the basics:
air
water
nourishing food
sunlight
movement
rest
balanced emotions
body and energy work
spirituality
You will hear me refer back to these foundations often, and I lean on them heavily when supporting my clients. When you overlook the basics, it can be hard to build lasting wellness on top of them.
In fact, I believe that even if the foundations are the only things you choose to address, amazing things can still happen. They truly are that important.
Wellness doesn't always have to begin with doing more. Sometimes it begins by returning to the roots—supporting the body with what it was designed to need and allowing everything else to grow from there.
-
Air is the first foundation of health, supplying the oxygen our cells need for energy and healthy organ function. Slow, gentle, deep breathing supports effective air exchange, helps move lymph through the diaphragm’s motion, and encourages relaxation, easing tension and promoting calm. Normal breathing generally provides adequate oxygen in healthy people.
Improve breathing by keeping indoor air clean with suitable air filtration and reducing exposure to smoke, dust, and strong fumes. Practice relaxed diaphragmatic breathing: inhale gently through your nose, allowing your belly and lower ribs to expand, then exhale slowly without forcing. A few comfortable minutes each day can build better breathing habits and support relaxation.
-
Water is one of the most important foundations of health. Choose clean, properly filtered water whenever possible, with reverse osmosis (RO) preferred. A helpful daily goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water, plus additional water equal to the amount of potentially dehydrating beverages you consume, such as coffee, tea, soda, or alcohol. Adding a good-quality electrolyte can also support proper fluid balance and help ensure you are hydrating at the cellular level.
-
Food is a powerful foundation of health. A simple approach is JERF—Just Eat Real Food. Ask yourself: Did it grow from the ground, walk on the earth, swim in the water, or fly in the sky? Prioritize organic foods when possible, avoid highly processed and prepackaged options, and choose a colorful variety of whole foods—eat the rainbow to nourish your body with a wide range of nutrients.
-
Sunlight is an important foundation of health, supporting natural vitamin D production and helping regulate your circadian rhythm for healthy energy and restful sleep. Prioritize gentle early-morning sunlight and evening light, allowing safe exposure to bare skin with minimal covering when appropriate. Avoid the hottest part of the day, increase exposure gradually, and always protect your skin before it burns.
-
Exercise is a vital foundation of health. Choose a fun, sweaty activity you genuinely enjoy—movement should feel good, not like a punishment! Regular exercise supports a healthy mood, improves circulation, and encourages lymphatic drainage, helping your body naturally remove waste and toxins.
-
Rest is an important foundation of health because sleep is when your body naturally repairs, restores, and heals. Aim for eight hours each night and maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule to help your body stay in rhythm. Create a calming nighttime routine and keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet to support deep, restful sleep.
-
Balanced emotions are an important foundation of health. Emotions that are ignored or left unprocessed can sometimes show up in physical ways. Learning to recognize, process, and express emotions in healthy ways can help reduce stress, support physical well-being, and bring greater peace and resilience to everyday life.
-
Body and Energy work can be a supportive foundation of health. Practices such as massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture, Reiki, Emotion Code, and Body Code may help release tension, support alignment and circulation, encourage relaxation, promote emotional balance, and improve overall well-being. These approaches honor the connection between the physical, emotional, and energetic aspects of the body.
-
Spirituality is a powerful foundation of health. Spirituality supports whole-person health by nurturing a connection to God or a higher power and providing a sense of purpose, peace, and hope. Making time to pray, reflect, worship, and grow in faith can bring comfort, strengthen resilience, and support emotional and physical well-being.
